There’s a concept in risk-management called the “Swiss cheese effect.” Each slice of cheese represents a layer of protection. The holes represent vulnerabilities. Catastrophe happens when the holes in multiple layers suddenly align at the wrong time and something falls through without being caught.
Relationships often work the same way.
When one spouse’s wound lines up with the other spouse’s wound, and both self-protect, suddenly a familiar reactive cycle ensues.
One criticizes. The other feels like a failure.
One moves closer because they fear abandonment. The other feels smothered and distances.
One sulks waiting to be acknowledged. The other fears the emotional conversation and so waits for them to “get over it.”
Most of the time, neither spouse is intentionally trying to hurt the other. They’re simply reacting from old places of pain.
Most couples stay stuck because they focus on the surface of the problematic behavior they dislike:
“You’re too angry.”
“You always shut down.”
“You’re too needy.”
But healing begins when we look deeper.
The Swiss Cheese Model’s intention is to shift the focus away from simply blaming the person who made the final mistake. Instead, it identifies and closes the hidden vulnerabilities that allowed the error to occur, helping prevent the same outcome from happening again.
At How We Love, we often say:
Your marriage problems did not start in your marriage. They started in childhood.
The ways you learned to survive relationship pain or unmet needs as a child often become the ways you protect yourself as an adult. Those survival strategies may have helped you then, but they can unintentionally create distance in your marriage today.
The beautiful news is that alignment can also heal your relationship.
One of the most profound moments in our Attachment Core Pattern approach is when couples begin to see beyond each other’s reactions.
Instead of seeing defensiveness, they begin to see fear.
Instead of seeing withdrawal, they begin to see overwhelm.
Instead of seeing anger, they begin to see longing.
They connect today’s conflict to yesterday’s wounds and choose understanding and comfort instead of condemnation and self-protection.
This kind of alignment doesn’t happen by accident. It takes intentionality, humility, and two people who are willing to become curious about each other’s story.
But when it happens, something remarkable begins to change.
Not because the pain disappears overnight.
But because compassion begins to replace blame.
And it’s in that moment of understanding where relationships move toward deeper connection.
