What’s YOUR Reality TV show?

What’s YOUR Reality TV show?
(Second in a four part series)

When one of my good friends tells his wife about a success or something promising within his business day, she always asks “Is this happy talk or is this something that is a real possibility?

What is solid?

What is a mirage?

What will provide me with real security, not a false security that comes from a buoyed up spirit about a news year’s resolution or a 5 year business plan or a new deal that has yet to materialize?

Where does real security come from?

As singer song writer Lauren Hill puts it, “Fantasy is what we want but reality is what people need.”

We’ll use Hebrews 10:1-25 as our base for understanding our true reality show. This week let’s look at Hebrews 10:1-4 and understand the realities of the Old Testament believers.

security comes from real realities.

1.  For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the very form of things, can never by the same sacrifices year by year, which they offer continually, make perfect those who draw near.
2.  Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshippers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have had consciousness of sins?
3.  But in those sacrifices there is a reminder year by year.
4.  For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take a way sins.

Oh the drudgery of the daily grind for the Old Testament believer.

Their reality show was to go out, find an unblemished lamb, and offer it to the priest day by day, month by month, year by year, and decade by decade.

Why?

If they wanted to be in relationship with God, they had to be making atonement constantly for their daily sins.  The Law required it.

“Pay for sins, find another guilt offering, what are we doing for dinner tonight?  Not another manna burger!  Tomorrow?  More of the same.  Where running out of sheep. Honey can you go to Trader Sheeps and pick up a couple more lambs?  We’re running out.”

This God imposed exercise in day to day tracking of sin was a reality that most of us would not enjoy.  But it was their reality.

Holy God + sinful man = disconnection.
Solution?
Holy God + sinful man + blood atonement sacrifice = connection & covering for sin.

A sincere faith in this system called the Law, was the only way to insure staying in relationship with a Holy God.

Wow, not fun.  Not on my “Bucket List.”

Yet, this was their only refuge, their only security as they wandered around in the desert and even when they dwelled in The Land.

So, “What’s in your wallet?” Is your security based upon what is sure or is it based upon “happy talk”?
Love and blessings,

Milan and Kay

Next week: We’ll continue to use Hebrews 10:1-25 as our base for understanding our true reality show. Next week we will study Hebrews 10:5-14, and look at the reality of Jesus’ world.
